The Best UK Walking Holidays Our Country Has To Offer

Within a relatively small expanse, The UK’s strong sense of regional identity means that within a matter of miles you can find yourself in a complete change of scenery, as you follow one route into the other.

Even with short walking holidays in the UK, you can find yourself in surroundings that still bear the mark of history in the ruins, castles and abbeys that scatter the fields and valleys of our self-guided UK walking holidays for singles and groups.

Walking Holidays UK

The United Kingdom's walking routes have long benefited from the good work and campaigning put in by organisations and interest groups. Over time, greater numbers of public rights of way have been opened, and new designated national trails have been put forward for the better maintenance of Britain's walking routes.

You can rely on most National Trails to be well way-marked and signposted, with a trail officer and team responsible for overseeing the proper upkeep of their area. Even in wilder parts of the UK, great strides have been made in the conservation of its natural heritage.

Our Service in the UK

Over 20 years of providing walking holidays in every corner of the UK, we’ve forged strong working relationships with B&Bs, hotels, mapmakers, transport companies and luggage transfer services up and down the country.

Local knowledge, working with trail officers and responding to feedback from walkers is the (open) secret to providing the best walking experiences in the UK. Between, England, Scotland and Wales there’s so much potential for incredible, diverse walking experiences - knowing these trails inside and out means that we can tailor the right journey for you.

Traveling to Britain

Burgeoning airports in cities and towns across the country means that you may not need to fly directly to London to get to the nearest airport to your route. That being said, this is not always the case, and if there are no direct flights, you can count on there being a short connecting flight from one of London's airports.

Upon arrival in Britain, getting to the start of your route via public transport should be fairly straightforward. Trains run regularly from London Paddington to all major regional  stations, from there you can expect an average of one connecting train journey to the start of your route.

Each region and county has its own bus service, the general rule of thumb being that rural bus services are far more infrequent than their metropolitan neighbours. Coaches operate between cities and towns across the UK and are generally cheaper, albeit slower and slightly more uncomfortable than taking the train.

Walking In The UK - Destination Guide

Great Britain or the United Kingdom (UK)?

Great Britain is comprised of three countries: Wales, Scotland and England. The term is only used when referring to these countries as a whole. When we say 'The United Kingdom', this designates Wales, Scotland and England as well as Northern Ireland.

Medical Cover

No vaccinations are required for entry into The UK. All citizens of the EU are entitled to free medical treatment under the National Health Service (NHS) with an EHIC card. Travellers from outside the EU will receive free treatment from the Accident and Emergency Unit, but not from admittance into hospital or treatment at a GP's (general practitioners) surgery. Taking out Health and Travel Insurance is always best practice when travelling abroad.

Money

Most shops, hotels and restaurants accept all major debit and credit cards, although you should always carry a bit of cash on you, particularly when visiting more rural areas or when using small businesses. You will also find an ATM in most small towns.

Tipping is expected in most cafe’s and restaurants but not mandatory. Anything between 5% and 15%, depending on the quality of service is acceptable. It is not necessary to tip bar staff as you will usually order and collect your drinks at the bar.

Internet and Phone coverage

Whilst phone and internet coverage in England is generally good, you should be aware that in more rural areas you may have limited coverage. For this reason it is best to plan ahead and not rely solely on mobile communications when you are out on the trail. You can expect phone reception in towns and villages, but not always mobile internet. It is increasingly common to have free wi-fi in cafes, hotels and B&Bs, but this is not always guaranteed.
