Key Walk Features

Walking the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man Coastal Path circles a unique island shaped by Viking heritage, maritime history and dramatic coastal scenery. Following the Raad ny Foillan, you'll walk rugged cliffs, sweeping bays, quiet beaches and rolling coastal hills, while discovering medieval castles, historic railways and traditional Manx culture. Recognised by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve, the island is rich in wildlife and varied landscapes. Although just a short journey from mainland Britain, the Isle of Man feels refreshingly different, offering a rewarding walking experience with a strong sense of place and identity.

A Distinctive Island Heritage

Walking around the Isle of Man feels like stepping into a place with its own identity and traditions. Viking heritage, medieval castles and ancient stone crosses are woven into the landscape, while historic steam and electric railways still connect towns and villages across the island. Despite its proximity to mainland Britain, the Isle of Man has a culture, history and character that are uniquely its own. From bustling harbours and fishing communities to quiet glens and remote headlands, each day reveals a different side of island life. It is this strong sense of place, combined with the island's welcoming atmosphere, that leaves a lasting impression on many walkers.

Path Walkthrough

Following the 95-mile Raad ny Foillan, the Isle of Man Coastal Path traces the island's varied shoreline, passing dramatic cliffs, sandy bays, secluded coves and traditional fishing towns. Highlights include the striking headlands around Port Erin, the historic harbour at Peel and the coastal scenery of Maughold and Laxey. While much of the route follows the coast, occasional inland sections introduce woodland paths, farmland and quiet country lanes, adding variety to the walking. The terrain ranges from gentle shoreline paths to more rugged and undulating stretches, making for a rewarding journey around this distinctive island.

Points of Interest

  • Castle Rushen on the Isle of Man Coastal Path

    Castle Rushen

Built in the 12th century by the Norse-Gaelic rulers of the Isle of Man, Castle Rushen is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe. Today, it is managed by Manx National Heritage and offers a fascinating insight into the island's rich history.

Castle Rushen features on Day 10 of our IOM1b itinerary. If you would like to extend your stay and spend more time exploring the island's heritage, we would be delighted to arrange an additional night in Castletown as part of your holiday.
