Why Walk Wainwright's Coast to Coast?

Fell walker Alfred Wainwright devised this breath-taking walk through the diverse landscapes of three national parks, by piecing together established footpaths and rights of way. In August 2022 it was announced that the Coast to Coast would become the UK’s newest National Trail.

The awe-inspiring scenery throughout your journey will offer a perfect balance of mountain, hills and valleys. As you would expect, this diverse trail can be challenging; we offer extended itineraries to help you enjoy every step at your own pace.

To follow tradition, after dipping your toes the Irish Sea at St. Bees, pick up a pebble for your journey. Pebble in pocket, you will go on to explore the dramatic fells and Lakeland views of the Lake District, the rolling dales and valleys of Yorkshire and farmland of Mowbray, before reaching the heather-clad North Yorkshire Moors. At your final destination, Robin Hood’s Bay, it’s time to return that pebble to the sea and celebrate.

As one of the most popular routes in the UK, you will enjoy the camaraderie of fellow walkers throughout in the quaint villages and cosy pubs along the way.

Coast To Coast Walk Through

The Coast To Coast Path offers walkers the opportunity to discover the almost every type of landscape that England can offer in one spectacular walk.  Crossing the UK from St. Bees on the Irish Sea to Robin Hood’s Bay on the North Sea.

You will begin with safe cliff top walking at St. Bees before heading into the Lake District National Park, world renowned for its breath-taking scenery. After passing Kirkby Stephen, you’ll reach the summit of Nine Standards Rigg, which takes it name from the mysterious line of ancient 10ft cairns that stand on the edge of the escarpment.

At almost the halfway point in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, you will touch on the Pennine Way as the two routes cross each other in Keld.

By the friendly market town of Richmond, the landscape has changed to lower meadows and mining moors with pretty villages and outdoor museums scattered through the countryside.

The final stretch takes in the undulating North York Moors National Park, requiring many small ascents and descents. Enjoy mile after mile of purple heather covered moorland through autumn as you head to the final section of cliff top walking and on to the celebratory atmosphere of Robin Hood’s Bay.

To get the most from this spectacular path you should have a good level of fitness, plus reliable map reading skills for areas of isolation and weather changes in mountainous areas.
