Why Autumn Might Just Be the Best Season for a Walking Holiday

There’s something quietly wonderful about autumn isn’t there? The air turns crisp, the light softens, and the landscapes whether you’re in the hills, along the coast or tucked into some quiet woodland put on a spectacular show. If you’ve never tried an autumn walking holiday, you might be surprised at just how special it feels.
I think one of my favourite times of year for walking is September and October, the whole pace of the season seems to offer a slower and more reflective kind of feeling. The summer crowds have drifted home, the paths feel calmer, and there’s a lovely stillness to the world. Everything feels like it’s settling down after the height of summer and for a walker, that’s a gift.
Without a doubt the colours alone are worth lacing up your boots for. Woodlands glow with amber and gold, bracken turns a deep bronze, and low-angled sunlight brings out details you might miss in brighter seasons. ‘Golden hour’ as I call it is out in full force on a bright, crisp autumn day. One minute you’re just walking; the next, you’re quietly moved by the view in front of you.
In the UK, autumn walking holidays have their own rhythm. You might start the day with a light mist lifting over a valley, wander through woodlands scattered with fallen leaves, and finish in a warm pub with a fire on. Places like the Wye Valley, Shropshire Hills, and the Cotswold Way are especially lovely at this time of year rich in colour and atmosphere, but still mild enough for comfortable walking.
Further afield, autumn brings ideal walking weather to parts of Europe that are simply too hot in high summer. Think Italy’s Puglia Coastline or Spain’s Ribeira Sacra where the sun still shines, but you’re not wilting in the heat. Vineyards are harvesting, villages are lively without being packed, and you feel like you’re experiencing a more authentic pace of life.
It’s also, if I’m honest, a wonderful time to just… take a moment. There’s a reflective quality to walking in autumn. You’re in no rush. You stop more. You notice more. Maybe it’s the changing season or the quieter surroundings but for many of our walkers, an autumn walking holiday becomes a chance to recharge, refocus, and reconnect.
If that sounds like something you could use, we’d love to help you find the perfect trail. whether you’re looking for a short break or a longer self-guided walking holiday, we’ve got plenty of routes that are simply stunning this time of year.
