Why This Walk?

A walking holiday on the islands of Malta and Gozo combines history, coastal beauty, and island contrasts. You will begin at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hagar Qim, a mysterious temple complex dating back thousands of years, before enjoying trails along dramatic cliffs and unspoilt shores. On Gozo, the wilder of the two islands, the walks pass through traditional villages and rural landscapes to spectacular viewpoints such as Dwejra Bay, where you also encounter the island’s landmark Ta’ Pinu Abbey. For the ultimate escape, the tiny island of Comino offers a full day of solitude, panoramic paths, and far-reaching views across the Mediterranean. Your journey is completed with time in Valletta, Malta’s capital, discovering grand fortifications, baroque architecture, and centuries of history. Together, these experiences create a journey that showcases the very best of Malta and Gozo.

Path Walkthrough

Your journey begins in Rabat, where cobbled streets lead to ancient chapels, catacombs, and the impressive medieval fortress of Mdina. From here, you set out to the UNESCO-listed prehistoric temples of Hagar Qim before following a coastal trail through farmland and vineyards to the dramatic viewpoint of Dingli Cliffs. A scenic coastal route near Imgarr brings you to Popeye Village (set of a 1980s musical), after which you continue north for a short ferry crossing to Gozo. This smaller island reveals a different side of Malta: quiet lanes, terraced fields, and timeless villages. Walks here pass the pilgrimage site of Ta’ Pinu Abbey, the rugged cliffs of Dwejra Bay, and the tranquil south coast from Xlendi to Mgarr ix-Xini, with opportunities for swims in secluded coves. A day of choice follows, either walking to the famous red sand of Ramla Beach or venturing to tiny Comino with its famed Blue Lagoon and panoramic trails. Your holiday ends in magical Valletta, strolling cobbled streets, grand squares, and harbour views that capture Malta at its most timeless.

Rural Traditions and Wild Beauty

One of the unexpected pleasures of walking in Malta and Gozo is the richness of the natural landscape. From autumn to late spring, the islands are carpeted with wildflowers: fennel, clover, myrtle, and even wild iris flourish along waysides, while fields brim with seasonal vegetables. Despite their small size, the islands remain surprisingly rural, with only a fifth of the land urbanised. Out in the countryside you’ll often see farmers tending terraced fields using traditional methods, or fishing villages where life still follows the rhythm of the sea. Along the trails, walkers encounter a variety of scenery, from dramatic sea cliffs and rocky garrigue to hidden valleys and salt pans carved into the coast. These contrasts, combined with the islands’ compact scale, make Malta and Gozo a uniquely rewarding walking destination.
