Exploring Slovakia’s High Tatras on Foot

This walking holiday showcases the great variety of the High Tatras through a carefully paced journey between three contrasting mountain villages, moving from classic high-mountain scenery to quieter ridge and village landscapes. Starting beside the lake at Štrbské Pleso, the route introduces the characteristic scenery of the High Tatras, with forests, waterfalls and glacial lakes set beneath Slovakia’s highest peaks. Around Starý Smokovec, historic huts and cascading streams add character to the high valleys, while the journey east to Ždiar reveals a gentler side of the mountains, with open ridges, wide views and pastoral scenery below the Belianske Tatras. The combination of alpine walking, varied terrain and welcoming mountain culture makes this an especially rewarding introduction to Slovakia’s most celebrated mountain region, appealing to those who enjoy both striking mountain landscapes and a quieter sense of place.

Path Walkthrough

Your walking holiday begins in Štrbské Pleso with a rewarding forest and lakeside walk to Popradské Pleso, a beautiful mountain lake beneath the dramatic peak of Rysy (2,503m) on the Polish–Slovak border.

The following day offers flexibility, with a choice of a scenic walk to the Skok Waterfall set among high mountain scenery, a peaceful forest walk to Jamské Pleso, or a combination of both.

You then travel by mountain train to Starý Smokovec, where waterfall paths, historic mountain huts and panoramic valley views characterise the walking. A longer outing leads to the emerald waters of Zelené pleso (Green Lake), one of the most celebrated glacial lakes in the High Tatras, with time to enjoy Slovak cuisine at the mountain hut.

The final days move into the quieter landscapes of Ždiar, with open ridge walking across the Spišská Magura, sweeping views of the Belianske Tatras, and scenic meadows and forest paths, before an optional treetop walkway finale.

The Culture and Character of the High Tatras

The High Tatras offer a character found in few other European mountain regions, combining dramatic alpine scenery with rich cultural heritage in a compact and easily explored area. Often described as the “smallest high mountains in the world”, these peaks rise sharply from deep forests into sculpted granite summits, giving walkers a high-alpine feel without the need for technical mountaineering.

Wildlife thrives here, making this one of the best places in Central Europe to spot chamois, marmots and golden eagles. A long-standing mountain hut culture adds warmth and authenticity, with traditional Slovak dishes served high on the trails. Beyond the mountains, Goral villages such as Ždiar preserve wooden architecture, folklore and music, creating a strong sense of place that makes this walking holiday feel scenic and culturally rich.
