Walking the Gower Coast Path

The Gower is widely celebrated for its natural beauty, but the landscape is also rich in heritage. Rhossili Bay on the western edge of the peninsula is the most famous of its landmarks, with vast sweeping sands backed by dramatic cliffs and the striking headland of Worm’s Head stretching out into the sea.

From here the coastline quickly reveals quieter corners. Walkers can climb the steep steps to the picturesque Old Rectory before continuing along the Wales Coast Path, or explore nearby Mewslade Bay, a secluded cove reached only at low tide.

Beyond the famous viewpoints the path links hidden beaches, small fishing villages and rugged clifftop paths overlooking the Bristol Channel. Despite the Gower’s reputation, many stretches of the coast remain surprisingly peaceful, rewarding walkers with a strong sense of space, discovery and constantly changing views.

The Gower Coast Path Route

The Gower Coast Path links a variety of beaches and coves, separated by stretches of marsh, woodland tracks and open farmland. Hillsides covered with gorse overlook the shoreline, and the route frequently drops to the coast before climbing again over dunes and low cliffs.

Long sections of dune walking occur between Port Eynon, Rhossili and the Mumbles, but the constantly changing terrain ensures the walk rarely feels repetitive. Wide sandy bays are followed by grassy clifftop paths, quieter inland sections and sheltered coves tucked between the headlands.

Although the route has few prolonged climbs, the ground underfoot can sometimes be uneven, with rocky paths and occasional sandy stretches. Between the more popular beaches the landscape often feels wild and open, while the villages and seaside spots along the way provide welcome opportunities to pause for refreshments and enjoy the coastal atmosphere.

Gower’s Tidal Coast

Few places capture the character of the Gower coastline better than Three Cliffs Bay. Here the landscape constantly shifts with the tides, revealing a maze of pools, dunes and marshes beneath the three striking limestone cliffs that give the bay its name.

From this dramatic setting the south coast unfolds as a sequence of secluded coves and hidden beaches. These sheltered inlets once attracted smugglers, who used the caves and quiet bays to land contraband along the coastline. Brandy Cove remains one of the most evocative reminders of this colourful past.

Walking this stretch of the Gower reveals how closely the landscape and sea are connected. Narrow valleys open onto wide beaches, dunes shift with the wind and tide, and limestone cliffs frame views across the Bristol Channel. It is this constantly changing coastal scenery that gives the Gower much of its distinctive character.

Three Cliffs Bay

Walking along the cliffs, the ground falls away to reveal the dramatic Three Cliffs Bay, where rugged limestone promontories rise above sweeping sands. As the cliffs descend into the valley, the route passes through the Pennard Burrows sand dunes before crossing the stepping stones over Pennard Pill to reach the bay.

At high tide, walkers will need to take the inland diversion through the woodland. Be sure to check the tide times for Three Cliffs Bay before setting out.

Three Cliffs Bay appears on the Southgate to Mumbles section of the GCP1 itinerary and the Rhossili to Oxwich section of the GCP2 itinerary.
