Day 1Arrival Day

Your holiday begins in the town of Alquézar at a traditional hotel located right in the heart of the village. Alquézar is one of Spain’s most beautiful villages, with lots of historical buildings to see. Those who arrive earlier in the day can take a circular walk around the village, or you may prefer to relax with a glass of wine on the hotel’s terrace or by the pool.

You first day of walking provides the option of two circular walks. The longer walk, taking 6 hours, will take you to world famous prehistoric caves and cave paintings in Vero River Cultural Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with views out to the Pyrenees. Those looking for a gentler start can take a shorter 4 hour walk through the Rio Vero Gorge, past olive and almost orchards and over two historic bridges. Both walks take you back for a second evening in the village of Alquézar.

Today, you will walk north from Alquezar to the medieval village of Lecina. The route will allow you to see the very best of the rocky landscape that this area is best known for, with spectacular views of the gorge and the opportunity to drop down into the beautiful clear blue waters of the river below.

From Lecina, you will spend the day walking through a more open and grassy landscape as you make your way to the village of Paules, a journey of approximately 5.5. hours. Along the way, you will visit the pretty hilltop village of Almazorre, cross the Rio Vera and walk along gently rolling hills.

Day 5 allows you to appreciate the remoteness of this area as you pass by abandoned villages and tumbling buildings. The day starts with a short transfer and soon your are in sight of the beautiful old church tower in the abandoned mountain top village of Bagueste. From there, you pass by the ruins and old dam at Letosa, before reaching the village of Otin for a lunchtime drink. You will then pass by two gorges, Isuala and Mascun with the option of dropping down into one of the gorges to see a beautiful waterfall if you’re feeling more energetic (6 hours walking without waterfall, 7 hours with waterfall).

Today you start to head south again as you begin your return to Alquezar. The route will take you along an old charcoal makers path, passing by a new but visually different gorge, the beautiful Balcez gorge. You will also be perfectly located to spot swooping vultures and the Pyrenees in the distance. Finally, after approximately 4.5 hours walking you will reach your lovely hotel in the village of Las Alumnias.

For your final day of walking you will head back to Alquézar along a steep but rewarding route. The path is a good one, lasting approximately 6 hours and taking you through a narrow gorge before opening out into open scenery. You will pass through the village of San Pelegrin, with its lovely, old church before reaching Alquezar for a relaxing last evening in this wonderful little village.

After breakfast, you will need to make your way to the airport, or alternatively we are very happy to organise accommodation in the nearby cities of Zaragoza or Barcelona if you would like to extend you stay. We are also able to assist with arranging a private transfer to the airport.

    Overnight locations and transfer arrangements may differ slightly from those shown, depending on availability.
