Hadrian’s Wall Path

Following Hadrian’s Wall from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway is one of Britain’s most compelling long-distance walks. The 84-mile National Trail crosses Northern England through open farmland, Northumberland moorland and the dramatic Whin Sill escarpment, where the Wall’s stone remains still shape the landscape.

Our self-guided walking holiday lets you explore at your own pace, supported by luggage transfers, detailed route notes and carefully selected accommodation. We offer both Classic and Classic Plus versions. Classic Plus provides enhanced comfort through upgraded rooms or properties.

Balancing achievement with immersion, the route brings Roman history into sharp focus. Milecastles, forts and turrets appear at regular intervals, while varied itineraries allow both first-time long-distance walkers and experienced walkers to complete this memorable coast to coast journey.

A Frontier Preserved

Built in AD 122 on the orders of Emperor Hadrian, the Wall marked the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. The original structure extended for around 73 miles coast to coast, while today’s 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail links the surviving sections across Northern England.

Substantial forts such as Housesteads Roman Fort and Birdoswald Roman Fort once housed garrisons of soldiers, supported by smaller milecastles and turrets positioned at regular intervals. Walking beside these remains reveals the strategic thinking behind the frontier. The Wall frequently follows the high ground of the Whin Sill, commanding expansive views across moorland and farmland.

Rather than viewing the Wall as a distant monument, you encounter it repeatedly throughout the journey. Few long-distance walks in Britain combine such striking landscape with archaeology of this scale and continuity.

Path Walkthrough

The Hadrian’s Wall Path runs for 84 miles from Wallsend on the River Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway on the Solway Firth. The route may be walked in either direction and is available as a full coast to coast itinerary or a shorter highlights section.

The eastern stages pass through urban Tyneside before giving way to open farmland and rolling countryside. The central section through Northumberland National Park is the most dramatic, where the Wall follows the Whin Sill escarpment above Crag Lough and reaches its highest point near Green Slack at 345 metres. Here the terrain is more undulating, with sustained ascents and descents.

Further west, the landscape softens into pasture and quiet lanes before reaching the wide skies and tidal flats of the Solway coast. Underfoot conditions vary from grassy paths and farm tracks to stone pitching along the escarpment, with clear waymarking throughout.

"Thought the planning of each day was excellent, with just the right distances involved. The glorious Cumbrian and Northumbrian countryside was a major plus. As to why a long distance walk, it was a case of start now or never! I am a scientist, so all aspects of geology interested me, as did encountering interesting plants and fungi."

James, Co Antrim.

"All the accommodation details and daily plans were provided, all we had to do was walk. As we walked we got a real sense of Roman history and appreciated the scale of the task. It reminded us that border security is as old as time and put the current political upheavals into perspective."
