    Arrival in Montepulciano by train or bus, easily reached from Rome, Florence or Pisa; catch the train to Chiusi, then take the local bus or a short taxi ride into the town. However you choose to travel to Montepulciano, you're sure to get a glimpse of the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside that you'll be exploring over the coming week.

    The day begins with a transfer to the village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate where you should take your time to enjoy the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, one of the best examples of medieval monastic architecture. The Romanesque Abbey was built in the 12th century but is said to have been originally founded by Charlemagne in the 8th century. You will follow a beautiful and panoramic walk with spectacular views over the Orcia Valley, before the final few kilometres takes you through woodland to Montalcino. At the end of the day you can relax and enjoy one of the outstanding local wines.
