Day 1Arrival Day

Arrive in Alba via train from Turin or Milan airports.The gourmet capital of Piedmont is a beautifully preserved town, decorated with medieval towers. Fine pastries, peaches and truffles are a local specialty (it's also the birthplace of Ferrero Roche and Nutella).

Follow tracks through the network of winding hills (known as 'colline') to the rustic village of La Morra, perched upon the hilltop. From here, you’ve got an unrivalled vantage point over the Alps and the Renato Ratti museum (where you can gain some insight on the art and tradition of the regional wine-making process) and during the summer months, Mt Monviso. There’s also a multitude of wine-tasting options on your route to Vergne, as well as the exemplary local wine shop – Cantina Communale.Or transfer to Verduno & walk to Vergne-Barolo (8.1 miles/13km)

Today’s walk takes you through the historic village of Novello, with its medieval tower and views over to the towering Mt. Monviso in one direction, and the castle-topped hills of Langhe on the other (don't forget to being your camera!). From here, you reach the wine capital of Barolo, taking time to explore the Catello dei Marchesi Faletti, home to the Barolo wine museum and various exceptional trattorias. The route then leads out through vineyards and woodland trails to the historic village of Monforte d’Alba, which also boasts wonderful scenery and the Alps as an awe-inspiring backdrop.Or take an optional shorter walking route that cuts out Novello altogether (5 miles / 8km).

As you follow the route leading out of Monforte d’Alba you’ll find a varied and shifting scenery of well-kept rows of Hazelnut to wild stretches of forest tracks that lead you over the hill to Roddino, and back down again before the final ascent up to Cissone.Or two other optional routes, both of which are approximately 12km in length.

A day to unwind, and take in the breath-taking views of surrounding Cissone on this short circular route. As well as the history and cultural highlights of Cissone that the trail beings forth, you'll have the opportunity to sit back and relax after a day's active discovery with an exemplary local wine from a traditional cantina upon your return.

Along routes too steep for cultivation, a familiar landscape of hazelnuts and vineyards leaves your immediate view as you make the climb to slopes capped with oaks. The slopes are famed for their truffle-bearing qualities, the ‘Tuber Magnatum’, also known as ‘The white truffle of Alba’, is a regional treasure, can can be found in the local restaurants of the area.The route can be shortened with a transfer - at your own cost (8.1 miles/13km).

Your final day is an interesting route through a picturesque and varied landscape. Upon reaching the stone, frescoed villages of Torre Bormida and Bergolo, join forest tracks through thick rows of Hazel and Chestnut set against the dramatic landscape of the Alps. From here, diverging routes over fields and narrow cobbled streets lead to the town of Cortemilia, famed as the 'Hazelnut Capital' and an important town in the centre of Piedmont's gastronomic wine region.

Have breakfast and (unless you have booked extra nights) proceed to Alba by bus, from where you can transfer by train to Turin or Milan airport.Please note if you are departing on a Sunday there are no buses from Cortemilia to Alba, so a taxi transfer will be required for onward travel.

    Overnight locations and transfer arrangements may differ slightly from those shown, depending on availability.
