The day starts with a steady climb from the hauntingly beautiful priory up to Hatterall Ridge today. You’ll head north along the ridge, the highest point of Offa’s Dyke. Enjoy miles of flat, easy walking on this wide, wild ridge with huge views over the English borders as far as the Malvern Hills. Watch the wild ponies and tiny foals grazing along your route. You will be collected at Hay Bluff and transferred back to the famous book town of Hay on Wye for the evening.

Returning to Hay Bluff today you will descend steadily back into Hay on Wye over smooth grassy slopes, woodland walks and meadowland into Hay on Wye. Stroll through the charming town again and pick up some provisions for lunch. You will return again to wooded paths and fields with views to distant views of hills over the Golden Valley. You will soon see the Great House and church of Newchurch.

From Newchurch the trail climbs again to Disgwylfa Hill with wide views on all sides. You’ll pass through Glasdestry village and head up to the famous Hergest Ridge above Kington scattered with sheep and ponies. Don’t miss the remains of a former racecourse marked with a curious collection of Monkey Puzzle trees. Look out for The Whetstone, a large glacial boulder and a local landmark.

You’ll start the day in England today and finish in Wales, crossing the Welsh Marches. As you head across Bradnor Green you cross the fairways of Kington Golf Course, the highest course in England. The Dyke will be clearly visible through some sections this morning.

Today’s climbs include Furrow and Hawthorn Hill overlooking the site of the Battle of Pilleth in 1402. An easy descent brings you to Knighton, known in Welsh as Tref-y-Clawdd, or “The Town of the Dyke”. This town marks the middle of the Offa’s Dyke trail and is home to the Offa’s Dyke Centre, where you’ll learn everything you need to know about this ancient fortification. A fitting end to your holiday. You may want to enjoy an additional rest day here to explore.
