The Llangollen Round is an exhilarating Welsh walking holiday over the summits and hilltops encircling the beautiful Vale of Llangollen on the Welsh borders.

The 25 mile route takes you through a huge variety of interesting countryside, where you have far reaching views of Snowdon and the mountains of North Wales before you, and the Shropshire Hills and Wenlock Edge behind you.

Walks in Llangollen cover large areas of hillside AONB and protected SSSI’s. You walk through open heather moorland, along dramatic limestone cliffs, woodlands, old drover’s trails, along sections of Offa’s Dyke Path and quiet country lanes. The area is a known habitat of curlews, golden plover, peregrine, merlin, as well as the elusive black grouse.

Pontcysyllte-Viaduct-walks in Llangollen-Round, Below you the River Dee carves its way through the lovely Dee Valley, towards the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, recently added to the list of World Heritage sites (now ranking alongside the Great Wall of China!).

The aqueduct, part of the Llangollen canal linking Shropshire and North Wales began in 1795 and has a 1,007ft span, stretching 127ft above the Dee Valley.

You stay in the old pretty border market town of Llangollen where the River Dee flows under it’s 13C bridge. The ancient town is famous for its International musical Eisteddfod held every year. Our Llangollen Walking Holidays take you across the Dee Valley and Dinas Bran

Field paths and heather moorland make up the routes terrain as you walk through the Dee Valley, with long stretches across hills and open field tops. There are some steep ascents, but from the climb up you should be able to pick out various distinctive mountains and hills of the Clywdian range (some claim that on a clear day you can make out Snowdon).

There are many sections on this path which are gentle and easygoing. Stretches that drop alongside the river Dee, running from Bala Lake - these are even paths, sedate and easygoing underfoot, even from the heights of the walk along the Pontcysyllte aqueduct. Using the abbey as a landmark, the route follows meadow and field before following the trail into the hills, with a steep climb to Castell Dinas Bran.

  • Best Time to Travel

Weather can be unpredictable, as is often the case across the UK. The best policy is have waterproofs in your day pack, or visit between Mar/Oct - you've a far less likely chance of running into prolonged rainfall.

Walkers are asked to bear in mind that in the more mountainous areas of your route, the weather can change quickly and mobile reception can become patchy. Having an extra layer of clothing and waterproof with you is always a good policy.
