We are very proud to announce that we have taken on Langdale Walking Holidays as the new ‘guided walking arm’ of Celtic Trails.
Langdale Walking Holidays specialise in small group walking and cultural immersion trips to international destinations. A highly experienced company, with a focus on high standards of comfort and service – they have been introducing their clients to adventure and culture across the globe for the last 25 years.
Together, we are taking a step forward to offer up new destinations and opportunities for those seeking out active holidays.
Why have we chosen to go back into guided trips?
Guided walking is in our DNA. The original inspiration for our company came to my Father, Angus, after taking guests staying at our family B&B on guided ‘scrambles’ across North Wales. It proved such a success that soon after he and my Mum were organising guided walks across Wales under the banner of ‘Celtic Trails’. One of our first trips was for members of the American Embassy and within a few years we were introducing clients from all over the world to some of the UK’s finest walking experiences.
With the growth of the self-guided market, in 2008 we made the tough decision to put all our resources into organising self-guided trips. We stopped running our guided trips, yet our passion for it has never left.
We have always believed that there is no better way to see the world than by foot. Walking is proven to be healthy for both the body and mind, it can be the best way to get to know your destination intimately and it has a low impact on the environment. As highlighted recently in the Paris Agreement, we can not ignore the issue that our environment is changing, and the travel industry in particular has a responsibility to engage with this issue. Digital communications means the world is shrinking, yet there are factions trying to cause greater divisions between us. Travel is a fantastic vehicle to get to know and understand our neighbours, to build relationship and friendships. When travel is done right it can invest and strengthen local communities, bring jobs to declining rural locations and encourage governments to protect their wild spaces. It can bring us all closer and jointly preserve our awe-inspiring natural world for future generations.
Why did we choose Langdale Walking Holidays?
Langdale walking holidays is an established and highly respected business. Through its founder David Fairs, they have pioneered small group holidays to unique and different destination across the world, while introducing their clients “to delicate ecosystems… while helping to preserve what remains of wild places”.
They share our values of offering high standards of itineraries, accommodation and personal service.
Over the last 25 years they have collected vast amounts of experience, knowledge and relationships in all corners of the globe. But as a small family business, like us, they had come to a natural fork in the road on where their future lies and that is where the discussion between us started.
How will we operate together?
Langdale will continue to operate under its own brand, acting as the ‘guided’ walking arm of Celtic Trails. David Fairs (founder) will continue to plan all the international holidays, while the daily operations will now run from our Tintern office. We will continue to use Langdale’s experienced tour leaders and their extensive network of local experts and guides. All flights will now be financially protected under Celtic Trails’ own ATOL license.
We’ve been hard at work behind the scenes for a smooth transition. We’ll be drawing on the vast experience Langdale Walking Holidays has in organising luxury guided walking, to help us maintain the atmosphere and quality of the guided trips – with the ultimate aim of bringing you the best walking holiday experiences available.
Which destinations are we offering?
As with our existing self-guided holidays, we will not be offering all destinations under the sun. Langdale’s ethos is to “provide quality walking holidays for people looking for something a little different” and we’re looking to retain the individuality and exclusivity of each experience. This requires careful research and meticulous planning, therefore only a limited number can be planned each year. The itineraries are unique and are different each time we return to a destination.
For 2018, our trips will include: following ancient pilgrim routes in Japan, exploring the classical architecture of Athens, walking and painting on the Greek island of Crete, exploring the beautiful mountain scenery of Transylvania – and these are to name a few. You can see our full schedule here.
We are very excited to be able to bring you what we believe to be the best guided walking holidays available; we hope there is a destination in our 2018 schedule to suit your interests and look forward to answering any questions you may have.
